# Automotive Buy Now, Pay Later Options for Auto Repairs

An unexpected repair bill can put a customer in a difficult position. The vehicle may be essential for getting to work, taking children to school or simply managing everyday life, but the cost to get it back on the road may be more than the customer is prepared to pay at once.

For dealerships, repair shops and automotive parts retailers, that creates a familiar challenge. The work may be necessary, and the customer may want to move forward, but the obstacle of how to pay for it remains. Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) gives eligible customers another option by allowing them to divide a purchase into scheduled payments rather than paying the entire balance upfront.

That flexibility is increasingly relevant in automotive. In a recent [PayJunction survey of 500 U.S. consumers](https://blog.payjunction.com/the-rise-of-alternate-payment-options) who own a vehicle, have a credit card and visited a dealership within the previous 12 months, 49% said they would consider BNPL financing for a large, unexpected repair. For automotive businesses, however, simply offering financing isn’t enough. The litmus test is whether the addition of flexible payment methods makes life easier for service advisors and customers or simply adds another system to manage.

## **Why Offering Multiple Payment Options for Auto Repairs Matters**

Because automotive repairs can arise unexpectedly and leave customers with limited control over the timing or size of the expense, offering flexible payment options is important. Routine maintenance can be planned. A failed transmission, air-conditioning repair or major engine problem usually cannot.

PayJunction’s [consumer research](https://blog.payjunction.com/the-rise-of-alternate-payment-options) helps to illustrate the difference. When faced with a large, unexpected repair, 82% of respondents said they would consider using a credit card, while 49% would consider BNPL. Only 25% said they would consider paying cash.

Consumers cited several reasons for considering BNPL: 63% pointed to the ability to spread payments over time without using a credit card, 57% wanted to keep more cash available for other expenses, and 52% cited better managing their monthly budget or cash flow.

The takeaway for dealerships isn’t that one payment method should replace another. It’s that customers want choices.

A customer may use a credit card for routine maintenance but prefer BNPL for a larger, unexpected repair. Another may choose debit or ACH. A customer who has already left the dealership may prefer to receive a Text to Pay link rather than have to return to complete the transaction.

From that perspective, BNPL can become part of an automotive dealer’s broader payments strategy. The win-win is to give customers different ways to pay based on what works for them without creating additional complexity for the dealership.

### **Payment Options and Payment Plans Compared**

Most automotive businesses already accept some combination of cash, checks, debit cards and credit cards. BNPL adds another choice rather than replacing those methods.

With a traditional credit card purchase, the customer charges the full transaction to an existing revolving credit account. BNPL divides an eligible purchase into scheduled payments according to the financing provider’s terms. Repayment periods, eligibility requirements, interest rates, fees and credit implications can vary.

For the automotive business, another important difference is how the financing option connects with the systems employees already use. A stand-alone product may require an advisor to leave the shop management system or DMS, enter information into another platform and bring the transaction information back into the original workflow.

Integrated BNPL is designed to remove those extra steps.

## **How Integrated BNPL Works During the Repair Process**

The most useful time to discuss financing isn’t necessarily when the customer reaches the cashier. By then, the repair decision has already been made.

The estimate stage is often where payment flexibility matters most.

Consider a customer who learns that her vehicle needs an unexpected $4,000 repair. With [an integrated BNPL solution](https://blog.payjunction.com/rethinking-the-fixed-ops-checkout-capture-more-profit-on-every-repair-order), the service advisor can explain the recommended work and see that the customer has prequalified financing options available. Instead of asking the customer to make a decision based solely on the $4,000 upfront cost, the advisor can also show what an available payment plan could look like if she chooses to proceed.

The customer is now evaluating the repair and her payment options at the same point in the conversation. That moves BNPL upstream from a checkout option to part of the repair-approval process, where it can have a more direct impact on whether recommended work moves forward.

Without an integrated financing option, a customer who wants or needs the repair may postpone or decline it because the immediate expense feels unmanageable and the advisor doesn’t have a simple way to pre-qualify potential customers. Surfacing financing during the estimate gives the customer more information when deciding whether to authorize the work.

It also helps the service advisor present the complete recommended repair without trying to anticipate what a customer can afford.

The bottom line is that integrated BNPL isn’t simply another payment method offered at checkout. It can help close repair orders that may have walked away entirely.

### **Creating Payment Plans Without Creating More Work**

If offering financing requires a service advisor to leave the DMS, open another system, re-enter customer or repair information and later reconcile the transaction separately, greater flexibility for the customer has created more work for the dealership.

The better approach is to [bring BNPL into the systems and workflows employees already use](https://blog.payjunction.com/why-dealerships-are-upgrading-payments-without-replacing-their-dms).

PayJunction offers integrated BNPL through its partnership with Sunbit alongside payment options including credit and debit cards, ACH, cards on file, Text to Pay and secure remote payments. Digital invoicing and integrated reporting can further connect the customer-facing payment experience with what happens in the back office.

That matters because automotive payments don’t all happen in the same place or at the same point in the repair process. A customer may choose BNPL while considering an unexpected repair, pay by card at the service counter or complete the transaction remotely through a Text to Pay link after leaving the dealership.

Payment choice should reduce friction for the customer. Integration should reduce it for the dealership.

That makes flexible payments both a customer-experience decision and an operational one, supporting repair approvals while also reducing manual work and simplifying reconciliation.

### **Let Technology Carry the Financing Complexity**

One of the first questions customers may ask is whether BNPL will affect their credit. There is no universal answer across the industry. Providers have different eligibility requirements, credit inquiry practices and reporting policies.

Service advisors shouldn’t have to become financing experts to offer customers another way to pay.

Where possible, the technology should carry that complexity. Eligibility, financing terms, required disclosures and available payment options should be presented clearly through the financing experience, allowing the advisor to focus on the recommended repair and the customer to make an informed decision.

Customers should be able to review repayment terms, potential interest or fees, credit implications and other applicable disclosures before accepting an offer.

The same principle applies behind the scenes. Before implementing BNPL, automotive businesses should understand how the provider handles merchant payment, future installments, changed repair amounts, refunds or cancellations, disputes and applicable transaction or eligibility thresholds.

## **Implementing BNPL: Start With the Existing Workflow**

Before evaluating a BNPL provider, map the payment workflow you already have.

Follow a typical repair order from the initial estimate through customer authorization, payment and reconciliation. Where does an employee leave one system and enter information into another? Where is data entered manually? Where is time spent tracking down receipts, correcting payment errors or matching transactions during reconciliation?

Common warning signs include manual data entry, payment errors, slow checkout, hard-to-track paper receipts or invoices and time-consuming reconciliation.

The same exercise should include repair approval. Does an advisor have to open a separate financing application or re-enter an estimate? At what point does the customer learn that flexible payment options are available?

Once the workflow is mapped, look for the points where employees are losing time or duplicating work. Those are the inefficiencies an integrated payment solution should remove rather than carry forward.

Modernizing payments doesn't necessarily require replacing the DMS or shop management platform. PayJunction’s approach is to integrate payment technology into the systems automotive businesses already use, adding capabilities such as BNPL, Text to Pay, cards on file and integrated reporting while reducing manual steps.

When evaluating a provider, ask for a demonstration using an actual automotive scenario:

- What happens when an advisor creates an estimate?
- When does financing appear?
- What does the advisor see?
- What does the customer see?
- And how does the information flow back into the existing system?

The answers will reveal whether BNPL solves friction in the existing workflow or simply adds another piece of technology.

### **Pricing, Fees and Affordability**

Terms and costs vary by provider and financing product. Customers should be able to see their payment schedule and applicable interest, fees or other terms before accepting an offer. Automotive businesses should likewise understand any merchant fees associated with offering financing.

Of course, cost shouldn’t be evaluated in isolation. If financing helps an eligible customer approve needed work that otherwise would have been postponed or declined, that potential impact should be considered alongside the cost of offering the payment option.

The objective isn’t to push customers toward financing. It’s to give them another choice when cost might otherwise prevent them from moving forward with a repair.

### **Compliance, Contracts and Repair Changes**

Consumer financing requirements vary by provider, product and jurisdiction. Automotive businesses should work with their financing provider and appropriate legal or compliance resources to understand applicable disclosure and consumer-protection requirements.

They should also establish clear procedures for changed repair orders, refunds, and cancellations and understand how those events affect the financing arrangement.

How a customer chooses to pay should not create confusion about the dealership’s or repair shop’s obligations related to the underlying repair or warranty.

### **Frequently Asked Questions About BNPL for Auto Repairs**

**Will BNPL affect a customer’s credit?**

It depends on the provider and financing product. Credit checks, reporting practices and eligibility requirements vary. Customers should review the provider’s disclosures before accepting an offer. Customers can apply through PayJunction’s [Sunbit](https://sunbit.com/)integration without a hard credit inquiry at the application stage. A hard inquiry may occur if the customer chooses to proceed with Sunbit financing to pay for the purchase. Sunbit may report account openings and payment activity to a major credit bureau, so customers should review Sunbit’s disclosures for details.

**What happens if a customer misses a payment?**

The customer’s repayment obligations are governed by the terms of their agreement with Sunbit, which address any applicable fees, collection procedures and credit reporting. The repair shop generally is not responsible for a customer’s missed payments.

**Who qualifies for BNPL?**

[Sunbit](https://sunbit.com/)determines whether a customer qualifies and what financing offer, if any, is available. Service advisors should not promise approval or a specific financing amount before Sunbit completes its application and eligibility process.

**What happens if the repair amount changes?**

If the repair order changes after a customer applies for or accepts a Sunbit offer through PayJunction, the steps for adjusting, canceling or refunding the transaction depend on the timing and applicable Sunbit process. Before implementing BNPL, businesses should confirm with PayJunction how those situations are handled in their workflow.

**Can financing be offered before checkout?**

With PayJunction’s integration with Sunbit, financing can be surfaced during the estimate process so eligible payment options can be discussed alongside recommended repairs rather than waiting until final checkout.

**Does the dealership need to replace its DMS?**

Not necessarily. PayJunction’s payment solution can work with existing dealership systems, and its Sunbit integration can add a financing option to the payment workflow. Compatibility and setup depend on the dealership’s shop management systems; replacing the core software is not inherently required.

## **Give Customers More Ways to Say Yes to Needed Repairs**

For automotive businesses, the opportunity isn’t simply adding another payment option at checkout. It's giving customers more ways to pay at the moments when payment choice matters.

Through PayJunction’s integration with Sunbit, eligible customers can apply for Buy Now, Pay Later financing for a repair. PayJunction also offers payment options such as credit, debit, ACH and Text to Pay, giving customers additional flexibility in how and where they complete a transaction.

When those options fit into the systems and processes employees already use, customer flexibility doesn't have to create operational complexity for the dealership.

PayJunction integrates Buy Now, Pay Later through Sunbit alongside credit, debit, ACH, Text to Pay and other modern payment options, helping automotive businesses give customers greater flexibility without adding disconnected workflows. Contact PayJunction to see how integrated BNPL can fit into your existing payment and repair process.
